Christmas Eve…is there a more magical time on Earth? We eat too much food with our loved ones out in the snowy world and drive around looking at the holiday decorations. Everyone’s hearts burst out onto their lawns for all to share. We slip into the cozy cottage, stoke the fire, turn on the Christmas lights and the beautiful, old-time hymns. There is a quiet space of anticipation. Fix souped up coffees (a bit of Kahlua, Irish cream, and Frangelico over hot coffee with whipped cream…’cause it’s Christmas, why not?). Then we read the Christmas story out loud, one to another, just as my father did when I was a child. My life now revolves around food production and the respect that flows from the Earth through the plants and animals to me and to others. We bundle up and head to the barns. My heart bursting with wonder. At midnight on Christmas Eve the animals will tell you their secrets, if you become very still in the presence of their slumber. Lucky you.
